Triumph TR6 - Wrong Hard Top
I recently purchased a 1973 TR6. The seller inclued a hard top that had been disassembled and stripped. Before restoring it, I realized it is the hard top for a TR5/TR250. I have been told it can be fitted onto a TR6. Does anyone have experience with this odd combination--or any warnings?

I guess the first question would be can you post a picture of the top? The second would be is it a one piece or a two piece top? There were (?, perhaps still are) one piece after market hard tops sold for the TR6 that followed the contour lines of the factory hardtop for the TR4/4A/5/250. A factory hardtop for a TR4/4A/5/250 would have a metal rear hoop/window section and a removable metal center section to be fitted between the windscreen frame and the rear hoop section. An optional soft center section was also sold and with this fitted, it is referred to as a "Surrey Top."

If necessary, I could take and post a photo; however, what I have is a one-piece fiberglass (?) top, with a curved plexiglass rear window--fitting the profile of a TR250. It sounds like what you describe as an after-market hardtop, since there is no center section as you described. If that is the case, I wonder if the moulding and fittings for the TR250 would fit this. The top was completely disassembled before I got it, so what I have are the top, the window, some old rubber pieces, and a bag of miscellaneous parts. I can buy a kit of parts from TRF--but don't want to waste more money if they can't be used to attach this top to my car. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sorry for the delay in response, things have been a bit hectic. I doubt that the Triumph factory parts will fit on an aftermarket one piece top. First thing would be to look for any manufacturer identification markings and try to chase them down. There is an outfit called Smoothline that still sells these aftermarket tops, they essentially took over the old Classic Hardtop brand and may be able to help you out. http://www.smoothline.com/triumph.php You could also dig around in Hemmings or on (fl)e(a)bay. Another idea would be to contact Moss Motors. They used to sell aftermarket hardtops and might be of assistance.

Now it's my turn to apologize. The past month has been rather hectic at work, and the car has been in the shop undergoing major restoration work--just returned this evening. I will take your advice and see if I can determine who made the hard top and where (if?) parts are obtainable. Thank you for all your assistance.
