Triumph TR6 - Trunnions cont'd
| Since my last posting trunnions have been soaking in PB Blaster. The other evening I had another whack at the bolts, I cut them off at the end of the threaded section leaving about 1" of solid bolt. I ground down the diameter of the bolts to compensate for "peening" as they were being whacked. Clamped the trunnions in my big vise, (with cardboard to protect the bronze),I warmed the trunnion(gently) with my propane torch while administering a few solid hits with my 2 lb. sledge."Pop", out they came!, very corroded, of course. One small step for man... In a similar vein how much play is allowable between the trunnion body and lower vertical link?. The driver's side appears OK but the passenger side is quite loose and just above the threads is well worn. As usual all advice gratefully received. D. |

| Dennis, forget the trunions, they are $40.00 a piece and are designed to wear before anything else does. They are sacrificial. Replace both with new units, you only want to do the job once. You will have to replace all of the shims, caps, washers and bushes, the polyureathane kit is a good investment at about $150-160.00. ( I wasted alot of time and money with the stock kit) This is a key handling area, do it right the first time. You might also want to re-place the stock rubber mounted steering rack mounts with solid aluminum mounts, very responsive handling. Sounds like you're in the thick of it, have fun. Chris |
