Triumph TR6 - Transmission vent??
Gentlemen, Is there supposed to be a vent on an OD transmission? When mine warms up it pressures up and blows oil past the seals. I noted that when first topping up this rebuilt transmission with overdrive, I would fill to the required level and then go for a short drive to get the oil moving through the gears and overdrive unit. After returning and checking the level there was a rush of air when the filler bolt was removed and always more oil needed. I’m using 30 weight non-detergent as recommended by the rebuilder. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Steve

Hi Steve Do you have a A type (early type) or J type OD (later type)? My A drive has no relief vent as such. I think my transmission vents somewhat through the selector rods (where they exit the top of the transmission). I assume you are running the OD when you do your short test run? How full are you filling the tranny? I assume you are using the side plug and filling with the specified amount. My book says 2 liters for an OD equipped transmission. Are you removing the filler bolt immediately after driving? As the tranny warms, the oil expands and will increase pressure in the unit. Too much oil and the pressure gets too high. A faulty pressure relief valve in the OD oil pump may cause excessive pressure and be blowing the oil out somehow although I am not sure exactly how. (this device vents hi pressure oil into the transmission- not to atmosphere)The OD pump is a positive displacement pump and will build excessive pressure if there is no such relief valve. Any other symptoms? Regards Mike

My A type has a vent just above the plug for the operating valve. It screws into the main case and has a cross drilled hole about 1/8" dia. It is not shown in either the Moss or TRF catalog. If you have the Buckeye articles, it is visible in the picure showing the pressure gauge fitted. You might check to see if the hole is clogged. Berry Price
