Triumph TR6 - To hone or not to hone

Looking at some info out there on not honing when re-ringing and using cast iron rings. The cylinder bores on my replacment block look great with no ridge. This is one article on the subject.

I'm not any help, but it was an interesting article. Any idea how cast iron rings last versus chrome?

I'm going to go the old fashioned way and hone them so the machinist will tank/clean the block. Too many pro's to honing even the ring manufactures recommend it with 220 and a cross hatch pattern. The crank is being ground/polished and the con rods trued. I'm going to hone the cyl's and the run the block down to be cleaned and align bored....figure if I'm going this far I may as well go the whole 9 yards. I'm on the fence on the bronze TW's though...I put them in my old block and they wore down quick and laced my oil with bronze ribbons. The copper faced stockers in the engine I got from my friend were barely worn. I think I'll go stock and just pull them every 10K and keep an eye on end float. Eeasy to drop the pan and it will take me forever to put that many miles on it.

I hone religiously but I have thought about the value of honing given that the old rings would have created a nice smooth surface for new rings to seal against.

But an argument for it- there is also some irregularity created by the gap in the upper most and lower most rings since there is no wear at that point at the very top and bottom of the cylinder. Since it is unlikely the ring gaps will be set in the exact position, it is important to eliminate that irregularity. It also creates a fresh regular surface that eliminates any other irregularities from the old rings and allows the new rings to create their own sealing pattern.

I will still hone as a result.
