Triumph TR6 - spigot or pilot bearing

When I was installing the transmission I noticed that the pilot bearing on the flywheel had some play. A mechanic said it may not be an issue but if it squeels it may need to be changed.

Has anybody had any problems or experience with this bearing?

The Haynes manual suggests that the flywheel can only be removed with the engine out of the vehicle. It seems to me that there should be enough room without removing the engine from the car.

Any ideas??

John, for 10 bucks you can replace the pilot bearing. Now is a good time to do it. I have never taken a flywheel off with the engine still in the car, but as long as you have the room to get some leverage when you loosen/tighten the bolts, i can't see there being any problem.

John, when I put the Toy. trans. in my car last year,I did it with the engine in the car, and you have to change the bearing to do that job. So yes you can remove the flywheel with the engine in.
