Triumph TR6 - Speaking of valve covers...

I'd like to install an aluminum valve cover on my 74.5, but have no idea of the quality of products from the usual mail order suspects. Does anyone have an opinion on good ones...or more importantly, those to stay away from.

Feel free to email me off list if you don't want to say anything negative publicly...I won't quote you but would appreciate the info.

For the most part, all of the usual suspects carry the same covers. On a later car such as yours, I think that black wrinkle finish covers such as the "Triumph Tune" covers look very sharp (note: Moss bought the Triumph Tune company several years ago although I think you can still get their covers from all of the usual suspects). From a period look standpoint, black wrinkle finish is the way to go on your car IMHO.

The only real caution I would throw at you comes in to play if you run roller rockers. The later style covers without recessed bosses at the cover hold down points (such as the black wrinkle finish Triumph Tune covers) work just fine with roller rockers. But some of the earlier styles with recessed bosses do not, the rockers foul the bosses.

I have an old, old early style aluminum cover with recessed bosses that I purchased from Roadster many years ago. Everything was absoulutely spiffy until I fitted roller rockers. I like that particular style (narrower, rounded shape at corners, plain ribs) on an early car. The solution was to machine away the recessed bosses, welded in plugs to bring things up flush and redrilled the fixing stud holes. I looked at it from the standpoint of "What's the worst I can do, make it unusable? I can't use it now so why not have a go at it?" The only thing I geeked out on was that we found a can of red wrinkle sitting around and next thing I knew, I had a red wrinkle finish cover with polished ribs.

I got mine from BPNW and I think Steve is correct...they are all from the same manufacturer. What I like about my bright Aluminium Valve cover is that you can take it on and off several times (for annual valve adjustment) and not loose the seal. I glued the cork gasket directly to the valve cover so it stays with the cover and simple tighten the cover back down after removal( I do wipe the gasket and the mating face first).
About the only thing I can say is that this year, I have noticed "spots" on the surface of the sides. It seems to disappear with polishing with AUTOSOL though. Even with my "Charlie" baffle, I still get oil in the fire trap at the exit (I am 1971 technology). Absolutely no where near as much without the baffle though.

With the CDN$ almost at par with the US$ I strongly recommend to all Canadians to definitely compare prices S. of the border. WHEN and I do mean WHEN our CDN suppliers come to the realization that us consumers have seen that the 2 dollars are virtually par ( no longer a 50% difference) and that we see that THEY have not reduced their prices to reflect this then we will continue to buy from US suppliers.

If any of you CDN suppliers read this BBS, Bloody well wake up and get realistic!

sorry Rob, I am off the soap box now.

This kinda bugs me like gas prices.

Steve and Rick,

Thanks for the input...it's much appreciated! I was considering the BPNW cover and think I might give Leighton a call to order one.

BPNW is my fav supplier at the moment. With very few exceptions (Tom Haines in Niagara is one of the best), I can't afford to buy parts from the Canadian dealers, so stay on that soapbox Rick!
