Triumph TR6 - Rack & Pinion Play

I'm wondering if I have excessive play in my steering assembly. I can move the rack and pinion almost 1/8" laterally and that seems to be quite a lot to me. Its clamped down properly but the play causes the steering to be a little loose. Perhaps this is intentional?

Are we to assume that you have rubber mounts for the steering rack? If so, they could be worn and that is causing the rack to move. Early TR's had solid mounts, and now there are aftermarket kits to convert later cars to solid mounts. It does take all play out of the rack, but be prepared to feel every little bump and rock on the road, and you should beef up where the rack bolts onto the frame, by welding in a couple of extra gussets, because the welds will crack! New rubber or urethane mounts are usually more than enough, unless your planning on racing the car.........

If the rack tube isn't moving, the play could be caused by wear in the inner tie rod joints or wear in the r&p itself. It looks like there are shims under the plunger cap of the steering box that can be removed to compensate for wear. I am looking at a 6 pack news letter that also shows that the pinion can be turned 180 deg if it is worn, as most of the wear occurs in the area that contacts the rack in the straight ahead position.

Its the rack that is moving. The U bolts are solid I think I'll shim it with some rubber washer to see if it helps.
Thanks all
