Triumph TR6 - Overrider/Bumperette Restoration Q
Need some tips/suggestions guys... For those with post 73 cars do you have suggestions on how best to restore the rubber overriders? Mine seem to have been painted years ago by a DPO and I just know there's lots of Armoral or similar goop all over them. Any ideas before I get into trial and error methods? Thank you, Ken

Yeah...remove them! db

You know... they're off now so I could fit the car into limited garage space for winter and I like the look Doug. I just feel they should be there. Maybe I'll get over that and just enjoy the cleaner look. K

Update... they are in being media blasted, primed and flex coat painted black matte. When I get them back I'll post more info. The metal bits will be sand blasted and painted. Today's a garage day... over cast and spitting rain so I'm installing those big clunky brackets that are under the car attached to the frame and bumper bolt. They were added on the 74 1/2 to 76 model years. I guess they were put there to add support for rear collision. They are an easy install... not! No room for your hands, it's dark, you need upside down bifocals to see... a lotto win would be good right now for a hoist and a high ceiling garage. K Oops... I'm hogging our BBS

FYI... The media blasting was expensive due to the time/care required to remove all foreign surfaces but not damage the original rubber surface. For anyone contemplating doing the same please know that the results can be disappointing in that the raw rubber on these things is not all that smooth right from birth. The overriders still look as though they have layers of paint or some sort of worn and chipped coating so my guess is that the moulds used back in the day were not flawless or not cleaned adequately between each new set. So, to keep the cost to restore these things from getting anymore insane I'm doing the rest of the job myself with many coats of a 1K build primer to smooth out the surface defects and then once smooth (several hours of sanding between coats with 320) I'll use a self etch primer to blacken the olive coloured build coats and finish with marhyde black satin. If you see me drive by please yell out something nice. KS
