Triumph TR6 - Overdrive Delay
Hi Everybody I wonder if anyone can advise me about a problem my J-type overdrive has developed recently. When I engage OD it normally cuts in almost right away but for the past couple of weeks occasionally it takes 4 or 5 seconds [which doesn't sound a lot but it's surprisingly long when you're waiting for an OD to kick in!]. It occurs randomly, most times it's OK, the column switch is OK, the solenoid was new a couple of years ago and the oil level is OK. It disengages normally, any suggestions welcome. Ron

Hello Ron. I'm not up to speed technically on OD but can say that there has been lots of discussion on this forum in past about the best oil to use if you have changed to something new or different lately. If you search the archives you should find opinions on what's best and why. My car is still in the resto process so I cannot speak from personal experience as yet. Ken

Some really good articles on the buckeye triumph website. Sounds like a hydraulic rather than an electrical problem, so i think i would start there (IE:check the filters, oil level etc.) Mitch

Hi, thanks for the replies, much to my surprise as it only has the odd drip the oil level in the gearbox was a little low and since topping it up the problem hasn't re-occured. It only took a little over half a pint of oil which is why I'm surprised it affected the OD with the pump suction being right at the bottom, however it looks like a cheap cure. Ron

Glad it worked out for you Ron, and those are the best cures, the cheap and easy ones. I just wish mine were more like that now and then! cheers, Mitch
