Triumph TR6 - Noise in rear axle?
Hello, I need some help locating a problem in the back of my 73TR6. I get a grinding sound in the back end somewhere whenever I'm over 55MPH. I just changed all 6 universal joints and checked out the differential at the same time. Full of fluid, no leaks, and everything turned smoothly. I had the noise before I changed the universals. The grinding only seems to occur over 55MPH and when I shift into neutral at that speed the sound is still there so I'm leaning toward the rear wheel bearings but the noise isn't there at lower speeds. Gear box fluid level is ok. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Jim K

JP Is this a new noise and has it developed over time? I find that at 55 or more, I get noise from the differential area. It is noticable when the top is up. When the top is down, the top and wind help muffle the noise. Insulation on the rear seat helps even more. I wouldn't call it a grinding noise though. Make sure your differential mounting barckets are not separating from the frame. This is a problem with the design and will add to the noise. If the 2 above aren't it and you have replaced the u joints then bearings it might be although I believe the rear hub of TR6 is usually trouble free and I haven't heard too many problems cited with the differential. Check your brakes and make sure the back plate of the drum/hub are still mated with the trailing arm and torqued. Regards Mike Petryschuk

Does the sound worsen if you turn light or left like on a ramp ? If so it will be the hub bearing...you can jack up the car securely or on a hoist and while it's running and in gear use a stethascope to listen to the hub, differential etc. That's how I found my bad bearing Charlie
