Triumph TR6 - No guts (power) from 1976 TR-6


I have been looking at purchasing a 1976 TR-6, I have drove the car and was disappointed in the get up and go. The car has an overdrive unit but lacks power, at least to me.

Twenty years ago I owned a 1973 with OD, which had all the power I needed, it was very nimble and ran very well.

I know they muzzled the motor for EPA reasons or something like that but I am surprised the lack of power is so evident.

Am I missing something? Should I look to check something to make sure it is not something about this motor? Or is this common with the newer models?

I remember reading somewhere years ago about what they had to do with the newer models to meet EPA, or whatever, standards and what they did to the motor to make that happen, anybody seen that article?

And than, what might I do to make this motor run like my '73? I don't want to do a major rebuild but if there are a few air pollution devices I might unhook, plug, whatever, I would look into that.

I haven't heard of such a complaint before, so I would guess the car needs a good tune up to restore some of the get up and go. (I will point out though that I have a 69 TR6 well before any pollution equipment save the PCV.) I also have the high compression engine. Perhaps the 74-76 TR6 members can comment further.

Check the compression to ensure the rings and valves are fairly good and not a source of the poor acceleration. Low compression could indicate worn valve seats and rings. Any air leaks in the vacuum lines will also kill performance. Ensure the vapour (sorry Canadian spelling) recirculation system isn't plugged because pressure or vacuum build up can prevent good fuel flow. (remove it is an option)

If that is OK, I would start with the carburetors and ensure they are clean. You can bypass some of the pollution equipment. Ignition timing is another key thing.

And of course depending upon how much you want to spend you can put on a high performance cam, enhanced carburetors, electronic ignition, shave the head a bit to increase the compression, put a turbo charger on it etc etc.

Thanks guys. I tuned the car but did not mess with the carburators, although I know how, as it was a rush job for an old friend who now wants to sell the car.
