Triumph TR6 - Mike Hawthorn In-Car at LeMans
Given that it is that time of year, thought there might be some some interest in this vintage in-car footage of Mike Hawthorn in a D-Type at LeMans from the 50s. The public road basis of the course is especially evident in the footage. Unfortunately, there is a drop out in the film just as he gets to Maison Blanc. Still rather nice vintage footage all the same. Scroll through the blog and see the YouTube inset for the video. http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/tag/le-mans/

Steve What a wonderful result for Aston Martin! I was working in the Jaguar team from 86 to 91 as crew chief at Le Mans and we had 2 Wins, I am having a beer or so tonight and remembering how I felt in 1988! Now how about 'Lewis Hamilton' in F1

Great footage - Hawthorn is so relaxed at 185mph!! If you were to try to shoot that footage these days you would need a barrage of marshalls keeping the locals of the streets... ...and the 1955 crash has to go down as probably the most horrific in motorsport history. Real racing is not for the feint-hearted.

I understand, no big endurance wins for us, but do know how we felt winning at the SCCA Runoffs. It's a good feeling. I had to feel for the Audi boys though when Dindo had the right rear wheel depart company at close to the 21 hour mark. They had led almost the entire race to that point and then to see it all flushed away in a single moment that late in the race had to be a massive let down. Our rule for endurance racing (think Daytona) was that if you are going to break or wad up the car, do it early. Going out at the the 20+ hour mark is the worst of both worlds. On Lewis, I think he is for real. I have to wonder what ol' Fred Alonso is thinking about all of this.

I don't think he is doing 185mph in the video, just saying that speed would be reached in the race. Nevertheless, he's going pretty well considering the roads are open to traffic; as he approaches a man on a bicycle he says 'Someone's in the way, never mind!"
