Triumph TR6 - Jag. upper balljoint on a TR6

Hello,

I saw a post somewhere describing how to fit JAG. XJ6 upper balljoint on a TR6, but cold not remember where. The result looks great, but unfortunately I lost the site address. Can someone help me...

Thanks,

I do not remember the site and would have to dig around if it is even still out there, but can tell you this much. The holes in the upper arms have to opened up for a larger diameter bolt (7/16 if I am remembering correctly) and the body of the joint is narrower. If you use three of the stock XJ shims, that should take you to the body width of the TR6 ball joint. Then it is a matter of shifting the shims to get the caster where you want it.

Regarding the bolts for the ball joint, this is where using a proper grip length on the bolt is critical. You do not want any threads in shear loading. You can get the grip length right by using AN hardware, but the threaded portion will stick out too far. You will need to trim the threaded end back somewhat. Run a castellated nut down the bolt before cutting length out of the thread. Then chamfer the cut end. The castelled nut will do a reasonably good job of cleaning up the threads when you remove it. Final clean up can be made with a die if required.

Hope this helps. If not, post back with additional questions and we'll take it from there.

Thanks Steve,

I believe I could manage with your info. I compared my new XJ? balljoint with a TR6 one and it looks similar but stronger and with may be a slight diff. for the conical part.

Cheers,

The taper pin should be the same, what you want is an XJ6 or XJ12 ball joint up through the series III XJs at least. They may have been the same all the up to, but not including, the XJ40 version of the XJ cars.
