Triumph TR6 - J type over drive

Hi all,

I was reading the available information about j type overdrives in the archives. It sounds like quite a hassle to do!
Is there any issue with changing out the complete unit, i.e. the transmission and the overdrive?
Would that be a more simple option as I can get my hands on a good condition gearbox/overdrive from a donor TR6?

Thanks, Neil.

Neil,
Yes, it is easier to exchange complete units vs. disassembling yours and rebuilding it with an OD unit.

However......

Compared to other gearboxes I've worked on, the Triumph box is fairly fragile. By that I mean there are a number of things that can go wrong with it if it has not been meticulously maintained.

Synchronizer rings wear out, 2nd gear bushing goes bad frequently (unless it is a 'late' box), the layshaft, it's bearings, and it's thrust washers wear heavily as well. Often the 'constant speed gear' (between the input shaft and the layshaft) is missing teeth too.

As long as it's had sufficient oil in it, the OD unit itself stands up pretty well.

Our club just had a transmission tech session a few weeks ago. One guy came in with an ostensibly good trans - it ended up getting a partial rebuild (all of the parts listed above).

I brought in one that was a known 'project' - it wasn't a disappointment there! It needed substantial work over what we anticipated. It's probably got $400 worth of new parts in it now PLUS needing a donor transmission for the otherwise really expensive or unavailable stuff.

There is all the info you need to figure out how to fix either an "A" type OD gearbox, or a "J" type.

I'm not trying to scare you, just would hate to see you get into more than you bargained for.

If I was to acquire a complete gearbox, it would get a full strip down to see exactly what's there before putting it in my 6.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the feed back.
The 5 speed conversion is looking to be the better option.

I put a J type OD on my spare 4 speed gearbox last year. It went together without a problem and fit into the car as would a standard gearbox and I love it. It was straightforward and works like a charm. I used a recondition OD unit from a UK specialist in Sheffield ($400 CDN with shipping) and put new syncos, bushes and layshaft in the regular gearbox prior to assembly.

The fussy-est bit was the rear mount. I used a piece of 5/8 plate steel across the frame members and place rubber bushing between the OD and the plate.

I would highly recommend the Laycock OD. It's pretty cool to throw the switch and get that extra Ummph.

Hello,

There is this place name Quantum mechanics that sell rebuilt OD or + gearbox or everything needed to adapt Volvo OD on a TR6 gearbox.
