Triumph TR6 - help--compression test
| hello folks well, I have been doing some more work on the 73 tr6 this weekend. Trying to figure how good/bad the engine is...getting most of the 'other stuff' done so I can pass the safety and get it on the road. so, back to the engine. I notice it is burning some oil--Blue smoke--not just at start up but when revving the engine I get some puffs of blue--not horendous, but there. Engine spects after warm up: At idle (750 rpm) oil pressure appx 40-45 lbs @2000 rpm 60 lbs 3000 rpm 70 lbs compression check (please bare in mind that when I did the dry/wet test I forgot to have the carb opened up--ie accelerator pressed--so this may effect results??) 1 140 148 2 140 140 3 135 140 4 130 130 5 140 145 6 140 145 --again, normal throttle pos... any thoughts on the engine condition and blue smoke...I am thinking valve guides... kind regards to all and thanks for reading. scott |

| What oil weight are you using and has it been pretty warm in Canada? |

| Scott The Compression seems to be OK so rings are probably OK. That leaves the valves still as a possible culprit for letting oil in. Check to see if the valves wiggle in the valve guides. The manual does have a spec for maximum play in the guides. I find it interesting that 3 and 4 are the low ones- next to each other. This might suggest the head gasket is gone there and that may be letting in oil. You might want to consider pulling the head off and replace the head gasket and retorque the head.
