Triumph TR6 - Gas fumes
I haven't bothered you guys for a while. The 71 TR6 has generally been doing well, but a recent problem has developed. We had a gas leak in the old gas tank. My son and I pulled it out and discovered a couple of fiberglass type patches that had failed. I ordered a new tank. The new tank was a little difficult to get in, but we did it. The openings were slightly different from the old one, but we were able to get bolts into the extra openings. Ever since we put it in, the garage smells of gas fumes when it is closed up. I can't find a leak anywhere. When you open up the garage, the smell goes away quickly, so it can't be much of a leak. The only thing I can think of that the filler thing just doesn't seal tight enough and mild fumes are escaping from there or from the fuel tank cap itself. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, John

John, couple of usual suspects in the stinky garage syndrome. The pad underneath gets saturated. Did you change it when you redid the tank? The rubber tube to the fill is not correctly oriented and it sounds like you had a problem with the orientation of the new one. The outlet is leaking slightly. The return evap line is not hooked up. These strike me at the moment.

John: Did you install a new cork gasket when you reinstalled the fuel sender unit? Check that out. Cheers, Bob 1976 - TR6

It's the outlet from the tank. I put it up on jack stands and started checking it out. Where the outlet threads into the tank is where the minor leak is coming from. I just drained the tank into cans and will get at it tomorrow or next weekend. My guess is that I have to pull the tank and see what is going on. If the thing is loose, that's an easy fix. If it isn't loose, it's a problem to figure out. Its always something! John
