Triumph TR6 - Fast Idle
Gents, any help may be appreciated. As a first time owner of a 76 I had immediately had a tuneup done and the carbs cleaned along with some other work. When the car starts it idles slightly below 1,000 which I know is a little high. If I drive it for a while (15-20 minutes) and then shut it off and restart it 10 minutes later I cannot get it to idle less than 1500, sommetimes approaching 2000. Thanks

Assuming your timing is correct and the idle screws are not too far in ..make sure the choke linkages are not sticking...do you have good vacuum at the dist ? I assume you have Zenith carbs ...the bypass valves can cause high idle if not set right. Typical idle is 700 - 850. Charlie

OK...What's considered correct timing? Using a timing light, should it be 16 btdc? 12 btdc?? 8btdc with vacuum advance to the distributor installed??? Mine is set at 16 btdc because, if I have it @ 12btdc and the engine temperature is aprox. 170 degrees, the engine's idle drops 850 rpms until it stalls out.

The best way is with a timing light.....whith the car running pull the vac line to the dist and the idle will climb, block the hose with your finger and the timing mark should be in the 12 - 14 range BTDC move the dist as needed. Plug the hose back on and the idle should drop to approx 4 - 8 degrees ATDC Also if you have points make sure they are not burnt or pitted, they must be smooth and clean. With the points open at the peak of the one of the six lobes set them at 15k with a feeler gauge that will give you about 34-36 dwell. Hope this helps Charlie
