Triumph TR6 - Checking trans fluid level

I need to access the trans fill plug on my 74 TR6,I have a fiberglass tunnel with no access hole. Can anyone give me an approximate place to drill an access hole, measuring from the console bracket.I really don't want to tear the tunnel back out, this is driving weather, not down time weather. Thanks in advance. Also what fluid should I use, this is an overdrive trans.

You can access the fill plug from underneath. It isn't the easiest thing to do, but not that bad - especially if you have an 8-point socket to fit the plug! I just use an oil can to top off, but you can get larger pumps that would work if you need to put more oil in. Shouldn't cost more than $10 from any parts store.

Cheers

D.M.-The fill plug is 7" from the forward console bolt hole and about 1.5" above the tunnel flange . I am in the process of pulling the trans./od as we speak. Oil choice depends on who makes the most compelling argument-factory recommends 90 wt, Quantum Mechanics 30 wt non detergent, Ken Gilanders/Don E.- 20-50 racing., Volvo ATF. Me? I have always used 90 GL4, but will try Valvoline 20-50 racing.
Alistair-I prefer the access hole for the fill plug because it allows the car to be level when checking or filling and it isn't necessary to crawl under the car.
