Triumph TR6 - Back Up Lights

I just noticed my backup lights or as triump calls them (reverse lamps) do not light.
I took bulbs out tested them and cleaned the sockets. That is all intact. When I put a meter into the socket no juice. Everything else on the circuit seems to work fine. My guess is it is the reverse switch.
I have looked all thru every parts book I own and can not find where it is. I know it is on the tranny but where do I get acsess to it? Can it be done with out a lift? Thu the cockpit or should I just forget about it.
Also are there any other tests I can do before I replace it. I do think I replaced it when they changed my overdrive switch about 2 years ago. Any help wpould be welcome and thanks...........JOHN

John,

The switch is on top of the transmission, and is about impossible to get to without taking the transmission cover off (which is not all that hard to do). Before you do that, though, make a few tests.

Near the front of the transmission cover, there are two wires that go through a hole in the cover to get to the reverse switch - one green wire and one green/brown wire. The green wire carries power to the switch, and the green/brown wire carries power from the switch to the lights if the transmission is in reverse.

First, check to see if you ave power on the green wire (with the key on). If not, trace the green wire back until you find the break or bad connection.

If you do have power on the green wire, put the tranny in reverse and see if you have power on the green/brown wire. If not, the switch is bad, needs adjusting, or one of the wires has come loose.

If you do have power on the green/brown wire, then there is a break somewhere between here and the back of the car.

See http://www.advanceautowire.com for a colorized version of the wiring diagram for your car.
