Triumph TR6 - Aluminum Steering Rack Mounts
Has anyone had any experience with cracked aluminum steering rack mounts. I picked up a used pair and while cleaning pre installation discovered one has a crack. It is the top curved piece along where the mounting hardware fits. Any advice here would be appreciated. Thanks. Shawn.

Shawn First, do not use them if cracked. Apparently you have come across a TR6 owner who could care less about another TR6 owner's safety. I got a new pair way back in 1999 and I cracked one while torquing it down. Do not recall where it fractured. Obviously replaced it. IMHO, this is not a part you want to buy used and put it on your car. I think the design is different today than way back in '99. The aluminium rack mounts are better than OE. Rick

Shawn Which style do you have? There are two completely different styles of Aluminium rack mounts that I saw when I bought mine last year. There is one that looks like the original (U-bolt) style mounts (I think these are the ones Moss sell), and then there is the type Richard Good makes (also available from TRF), which seems to be a lump of aluminium (alloy of some sort, I guess?) split in the middle and machined (very nicely, I might add) to clamp the rack. From my description it is probably obvious that I went with the Goodparts mounts. I find it hard to believe that the Goodparts mounts would crack unless there was some serious abuse in the installation. Looking at how well these clamp the rack and then at the stock mounts I am amazed that the rack stayed in place for over 30 years! I realise that this is not much help with the crack you have, but a recommendation for the type of replacement to buy is always useful to me. Cheers Alistair
