Triumph TR6 - Alternator squeal
My 72 has a 35amp alternator that sounds just fine until I turn my headlights on (no problem at the parking light level). Then I hear a bit of squeal and my ears, with or without using a stethoscope, can't discern whether the noise is coming from within the alt or from the belt/pulley. The belt is in fine shape and adjusted to .5 inch play. Bearing? bushes? belt adjustment? I would like to have the alt rebuilt anyway and I remember a Toronto area contributor mentioning a shop that could rebuild and up the amps a little (I don't run anything extra so I don't need much boost). However I couldn't find it in the archives. I want to rebuild and not replace because the current alt has a beautiful chromed housing. A related question, I also want to buy a new bettery and thinking of Interstate's red top Optima. Comments? thanks, Ian.

Master Rebuilders & Electric, 80 Ossington Ave (West side of Ossington, North of Queen, South of Dundas). Had mine done there. They do the work on-site! As for the battery, the Optimal is pretty, and a good battery too. (I have the yellow, a little over-kill).

Ian The man is Michael Hildrey at British Vehicle Electric. He is an ex Lucas tech who rebuilds and tests Lucas alternators and starters - he always has a table at Ancaster, Bronte etc and keeps most popular units in stock for exchange. I bought an exchange replacement for my 73 MGB in 2003 for $75 - it looked and worked beautifully. Michael is located in Beeton and can be reached at (905) 729-1035. No commercial interest etc. Good luck, Barry 75 TR6

I would not recommend using british electric for your alternator, there have been some horror stories of late including one chap getting his smog pump back disassembled when BA gave up on the job. On his alternator rebuild, he found they used inferior replacement parts and he had to get the job redone elsewhere In Etobicoke there is a small company that rebuilds or replaces alternators, they put together a 75 amp Bosch that was a direct replacement for my 76 6's original. GoodPrice Alternator and Starter, 416 745 664 BTW, Rebuilding is not cheap so if your interested, I have an ACR 18 (37 amp) that was completely torn aprart and rebuilt using quality parts..it is available if you are interested Bob
