Triumph TR3 - Will Not Start When Hot
After the valves were ground by my trusty mechanic, and everything reassembled, the smooth running TR3 was a bit difficult to start when cold, and it was - or became - very difficult to start when hot. After I hit the "three push start limit" I gave up trying to figure out what the problem was. The shop discovered that the choke assembly doesn't really have the leverage to pull the "chokes" all the way, but they made adjustments and will extend the levers. They corrected the lean mixture which looked like the source of all the trouble, and now it starts wonderfully when cold, great when medium warm, and occasionally when hot. Any ideas on why a TR3 won't start when hot?

Dennis, It sounds as though the carb is running way too rich (starts easily when cold). You might try adjusting the mixture according to the book and see if leaning it out doesn't help. Bill Stagg

Hi Dennis: I don't understand why your mechanic would extend the choke levers. The length of stroke on the levers is determined by the travel of the cable. With the levers full forward and the choke pushed fully in to the dashboard you tighten the cable clamp on the lever. The choke can then be pulled to bring the levers as far back as they will go. You may have to eat your Wheaties before you can pull it all the way but it will go.
