Triumph TR3 - Unknown Part
| Last night I pulled my weber carbs off to be rebuilt. After removing them I noticed a what looked like a valve below the manifold and toward the rear that comes out of the engine block. Looking at my manuals and other resources that I have an exploded view of the distributor side of the block. Anyone know what this might be. Thanks Russ Austin |

| If it is a brass valve on the block above the starter and under carb #2, it's a drain valve to drain the water/antifreeze mix from the block. If you want to open it, the handle on top only turns one way. Don't turn it the wrong way or you may crack the top brass handle off. If it's too tight to turn and you want to (or need to) drain and flush the rad/block/heater system, unscrew this valve from the cast iron block using a big adjustable wrench. Then you can see how it turns inside - it's better and easier on the bench. They are still available and it's also the same one on the bottom of the radiator - if it's still "as original". | Ok, Don...don't keep us in suspense. Which way is it SUPPOSED to turn? Or does it vary with LHD and RHD? Bill |

| If your tap handle is on top of the valve body and if it's aiming rearwards towards the firewall, it should be off or closed. Logically you pull the handle out to be aiming towards the inner fender wall (in line with the drain outlet) and it should be open. I thought I'd have to wait till Spring to look at mine, but after your request, I realised I could look at Frank's TR3A that I'm restoring and it is all open. I pulled the tap handle out as above and nothing came out, because I had earlier drained the rad and the block. So I'm assuming what I wrote above is correct. Don Elliott, 1958 TR3A |
