Triumph TR3 - Turn signals failing slowly
| Well I have had my TR3A for a bit over 9 months and I am enjoying it a lot. Seems every time I fix one thing another issue arises. I could fill this forum with my last nine months experience but figure I would write as I am in need of some advice on the latest issue. My turn signals were working just fine. Then I noticed the right one stopped working. This usually meant a blown bulb in all my other cars but not here. I removed each bulb, checked it with a VOM and visually and they were all fine. While I was looking at the bulbs I took the opportunity to clean each socket and put a bit of anti seize and electrical grease to keep things from corroding. I have done this with every car I own and it has worked fine. After I put everything back together, I tried the signals again and no change. I then got the manual out and it instructed me how to check the flasher unit with a VOM. The unit checks out fine according to the process in the manual. Now I check it again and the left signal begins to flash quickly the right side is still dead. After a day or so, both sides are dead. My suspicions are now with the switch but that seems to be a rather involved process so before I begin I figure I should seek advice here first. I can tell you that I had a bad fuel gauge when I purchased the car. I purchased a replacement from eBay and it worked well for two weeks and then it began blowing fuses until I disconnected it. I am going to get the original refurbished. Seems the one I purchased from eBay was not exactly the same even though the seller said it came from a TR3. Right now I have the leads form the fuel gauge taped up to avoid any shorts until I get the gauge fixed. I mention this because it is the same circuit as the flashers. I am wondering if the circuit is balanced and if a component is removed it affects others. My wiring harness is new so that is not the issue. Well that is my issue. Any suggestions out there? | First I would check the flasher unit. Then I would check the wiring where it comes out of the steering unit and check the set screws in the steering hub to see they are holding the circular plate in the steering hub properly. I have had both problems. To check the switch operation trace the wires that come out of the tube that terminates in the steering unit to the point where there are disconnects near the left front wing. Disconnect them and use an ohmmeter on the wires that go up the tube as you position the turn switch to left and right. The common wire on my wire harness (original) is green-brown, with right as green-white and left as green-red. That should help determine your problem. Good luck! HJRTR3 |

| To make sure you do not have a blown fuse (and no brake lights or wipers) check the power at the input to the flasher unit. It should be around 12 volts at terminal B of the flasher unit. HJRTR# |
