Triumph TR3 - Trunnion & Propeller Shaft Lube

When it comes time to lube the propeller shaft bearing and trunnions, what's the right way to go? Grease? Oil? Butter?

I've seen a few suggestions either way, so I'd love hear what you're using in YOUR car.

If it's grease, do you heat the trunnion to promote dispersion of the grease? Have you been experiencing satisfactory wear rates?

If it's oil, what are you using to get deliver the oil to the fitting? Is it a mess? How much is enough? What are you using?

I've read Don Elliott's earlier post on the TR6 board about using grease, and I found a web posting by Peter Zaborski about using a Quicksilver grease gun capable of delivering oil.

What are the rest of you doing? If you've used grease, can you just start using oil? What about if you've used oil, can you start using grease?

Thanks, everyone!

The owners that use oil in their trunnions are the later TRs. They dont have a grease fitting on the bottom. We have grease fittings so that's why I have always used grease. I give it one squeeze of grease in the trunnions, at the most two, when I do a grease job - every 3000 miles (or sometime more). I always used ordinary lube grease in a cartridge, but I'm going to start using Amsoil red synthetic grease because I'm hoping that the lousy rubber boots from Taiwan for the ball joints etc won't go gummy on me like they do with regular lube grease.

Regular grease on the drive shaft - about a slug every 12,000 miles. Too much grease in the U-joints or too often and it gets centrifugally slung out all over the inside of the tunnel and the floor bottoms and if the tunnel is not sealed tightly, it'll creep up and stain your tunnel and floor carpets.

To seal my tunnel, I use clear window Seal & Peel for leaky window frames in your house for the winter.
