Triumph TR3 - Tripod Lights
Can someone answer questions on Tripod Lights. Where these standard on TR3's? If so was it a Lucas product? Are they bright enough to use in comparisom to sealed beam halogens? I need to be seen and also see the road well? Are these recommended? My kids want to know what I want for Christmas. I saw them in a catalog some where.

They were not standard on new TRs but they were available from Lucas. TRA do not deduct points from a TR2 to TR3A or TR3B if the car has the Tripod lamps with the small black dot in the front center. I lost points at TRA in the concours because I had the Lucas PL-700 tripod lamps with the heraldic shaped crest in the center. I had bought these in 1963 new for $16.00 the pair. TRA say these were only available in 1963 so are not concours acceptable for a sidescreen TR because they were not current during the production years. These same lights sell for about $160 to $200 each now. The repros with the small black dot do not have the name Lucas on the black dot like the originals because of licencing problems with the name on a product not made by Lucas. They are reasonably priced. The originals with the Lucas name on the dot must cost a fortune, if you can find them. I would check with Moss, TRF etc. and ask them if their repros are available with halogen bulbs. I know I was running halogen bulbs in my PL-700s.

I believe that the "tripod" lights were not available on US cars, but were standard equipment on cars intended for the UK market. The strict "sealed beam only" regulations of that era made for the difference. Al Christopher
