Triumph TR3 - TR3 Le Mans Head

Hi all, does any one know of any information about the Le Mans head other than what Bill Piggott has in his book? It was a low port head that ran 1 3/4 SU's.
Thanks in advance for any info.

The low port head is the term used to define the heads used in the TR2's. As for Lemans Heads, I suggest that maybe a few heads were skimmed etc. for more "snap"

Don I think you have Piggotts book (ORIGINAL TRIUMPH TR2/3/3A) On page 67 he shows a chart of Cylinder Head Specifications. TR3 "Le Mans" head engine # 9350E to13052E Some 3000 heads produced with 1 1/2 inlet port dia. Had a different inlet manifold that would handle the H6 SU's. I have the manifold and a head that seams to fit (bigger inlets) so I was just hoping for some history. Piggott indicates some high port heads were introduced prior to 13052E. So who knows how many are actually out there....Thanks for the response. Brian

I went to the BBS Forum of the TR Register and asked your question there for you. So far there has been only 1 reply - from John Saunders whom I met about 3 times in USA and again this May in Gaydon, England when I attened the S-T Car Day. John has a TR2.

I don't know whether this info will help, but I found this out some time ago. Note that somewhere there is an error in published info. references.

The Le mans head has a number 503662 and could be described as a semi high port head. It was fitted from engine number 9350 to 13052, so it is rare. 503663 is the late high port late TR3 and TR3A type head. The carb. manifold should be a different 4 stud type (302006) as the larger carbs are always 4 studs. The high port head used 302119 as the carb manifold.
As there was a power increase using the larger carbs, it is likely that there was a small power increase using the Lemans Head, though I cannot give you details. Also note that the TS numbers refer to engine, not chassis numbers - I had car TS 12785, which was fitted from new with engine TS 13386 - a high port TR3 style engine.

John Saunders

Thanks Don, too many threads on the go. I thanked you for posting on the BBS (I am a member) on your gearbox thread, and I did read John's post. It is pretty much out of Piggott's book. I am surprised there are not a lot of these around. I will thank John on the BBS. Brian
