Triumph TR3 - Sump Sealing

I've prepared the oil sump and the mating surface on the block for what will hopefully be a happy, leak free union. What methods of sealing the gasket surfaces have folks found to be particularly effective? Should gasket sealer be used on both sides of the gasket? Any special tips?

Also, what's the best way to keep the oil plug from leaking given that it has no washer?

Many thanks.

Hi Bill:
I used gasket goo on both sides of the gasket on mine just to be sure. That was of course also making sure that the pan was flat at the bolt holes. To retighten after 500 miles or so is agood idea .
The drain plug won't leak because it has a tapered pipe thread.
Chuck

Hi Bill - Chuck is right but I still put a wrap or two of teflon tape around the tapered pipe threads for the oil pan drain plug - just in case.

Many thanks for the insights, gents. I'll try anything short of welding the sump on the block. I may not get every drop, but I'm determined to come as close as I can. Any other suggestions you have while I have relatively easy access to things would be most appreciated.
