Triumph TR3 - Studs
In removing my valve cover the two mounting studs came loose from the head as I backed out the frozen Nyloc nuts. What's the best method/goop to use for reinstalling these studs so that they stay put? The same question applies to installing the pedestal for mounting the timing cover. Nothing worse than loose studs... Many thanks. Bill Stagg 1961 TR3A

Bill - Mine have been like that for 45 years. Sometimes the studs unscrew from the head and sometimes it's the nut that comes off. I say, "It's not a problem. It doesn't cost anything. Nothing is broken. And it's easy to put back with the same parts." Don Elliott, 1958 TR3A

Thanks for the encouragment, Don. I'm into easy and cheap these days. On a more critical note, I was curious about how head mounting studs are put in place. And what about the timing cover pedestal? Is that just a matter of tightening down on a split lock washer? Any Loctite or other goop involved? Thanks, all. Bill

The studs that hold the head onto the block are threaded into the block. To undo them, you have to pull the carbs, the manifolds, then the head to unscrew them. Mine are the originals with 150,000 miles on them. If it ain't broke - don't fix it. The pedestal is tightened into the front of the block with a lock washer. Before putting the timing chain cover into place, put a fiber washer up against the flat shoulder on the front post of the pedestal, then some kind of goop on both sides of the fiber washer to hold it there and to seal, once you get the cover back on. Then put more of the same goop onto another fiber washer on the outside, push it onto the stud extension, then a flat washer, then a lock washer and torque down the nut to the proper spec. Get the fiber washers at Ace Hardware. Don Elliott, 1958 TR3A
