Triumph TR3 - Steering wheel refurbishment
Hello yet again, What product have you used to recoat the steering wheel rim and aluminum center hub? Is there a business that offers this service? After recoating I have a very nice black leather cover from http://www.wheelskins.com/ to stitch on. Thanks, Steve

I used black floor enamel, it's a bit shiny. But will age. I have a new control head, so it's too shiny too.

I used JB Weld to fill the cracks, splits and and gaps in the part you want to cover. I let it cure, then I sanded it with finer and finer wet sandpaper, then sprayed it black. JB Weld costs about $8.00 at Cdn. Tire. It can be used in other places to put threads into holes. Mix it up, squeese it into the hole, let it cure and then drill & tap it like it was metal. http://jbweld.net/index.php

Thanks Tom and Don, The wheel is actually in great shape, just drying out from time and exposure to UV. There is a manufacturer that has a spray that they claim will work on outdoor plastic furnature. I may give that a try. Cheers, Steve

Maybe you can polish the oxidised layer off the top of your paint. Starting with fine steel wool, you get the lighter colored/dried out layer. Then use a rubbing compound to get a shine back. I think that would look better than a shiny, plasticky look. If you go through the finish you have, you can then repaint if needed. Kinda related, I see plastic parts for control heads offered on ebay. I believe these are being sold off of the new ones, and the old bakelite (?) ones are being reused on restorations desiring the more original appearance.
