Triumph TR3 - Steering Improvements

Gents,

Three steering Q's tonight.

1. What's the best way to remove and replace the silent bloc pins from the tie rod in the steering linkage? Can this be done with the linkage in place? 2. Can the oil seal and bush in the steering box be replaced without removing the box?
3. What's the best way to check the end float in the steering box, and can it be done with the box in place?

Many to any and all who can 'steer' me right.

Hi Bill

1. At your local auto parts and tool store, you can buy a tool much like a cold chisel but instead of the chisel end, it is like a yoke or fork with an opening between each "finger". It will cost about $5.00. You remove the nuts and stick the fork or yoke under the ball joint or rod end and start hammering. This will remove these parts as well as separate the silent block bushes from the central cross rod.

To get out a silent block, with the nuts removed, grind off the top end or flange. With a drift or steel rod, say 1/2" diameter, start hammering out the silent block. The central rod will probably come first, then the rubber and with a die grinder or a similar cutting tool like a Dremel bit you cn get the rest out. Or find a scocket with the best diameter and put it in a vice and press out the remains.

Then press ones into place and re-assemble.

2. If you can get the nut off the botom, it should be feasible. If there isn't enough space, then I suppose you have to pull it out.

3. Sorry, I don't remember.
