Triumph TR3 - Steering Box Oil seal
| While I was tearing down the front of my TR3 to replace the timing chain I noticed the Oil Seal on the bottom of my steering box is leaking. Is there any way to replace the seal without pulling the box? Thanks Scott Feldman |

| Looking at the "exploded" view diagrams in the parts catalog makes me think you will have to remove the nut (Item 25) at the bottom of the steering box. Then using a "Y" or "yoke" separator (it's like a cold chisel but has two fingers on the end like a yoke) you remove the LHS Lower Drop Arm (24) - then you have access to the seal. | Scott-You might be able to replace the seal without removing the steering box, but unless you are satisfied that the box has been rebuilt, if might be better to bite the bullet, remove the steerng gear, disassemble it, and check the parts for wear. It will never be easier, if the apron and rad. have been removed. Look for play in the bushing/rocker shaft, end play in the col., and wear in the conical peg or cam. The peg can be replaced if worn, rotated 90 deg, or use a spring loaded one as Don suggested. |
