Triumph TR3 - Speedometer Cable
Hi guys: I have a right angle adapter drive connecting my TR3A engine's speedo cable to a TR4 gearbox w/ OD. I have the opportunity to buy a new one at auction which LOOKS exactly like mine, for a good price. Mine calibrates the mles correctly, so I assume it's use is correct. Problem is, Im trying to verify the part numbers given. I'm being told it's a Triumph part #140762, and a Smith's part #BFG2401/04. Neither of which I can find on line at Moss or TRF, and there's no number on mine. Any ideas? Thanks - and isn't it nice to be driving again? Mike G. '56 TR3

Mike - Moss in California for some reason about 35 or 40 years ago decided on their own part numbering system which causes a lot of TR owners a lot of grief. Moss in England (formerly known as Cox & Buckles) always used the TR numbering system. On page 34 of their UK Catalogue they call out the part for a TR4A as #120694 - Speedometer Angle Drive. Their price from 2002 quotes £40.47. This includes 17.5% VAT (Sales Tax) and if the part is exported, this 17.5% is not charged. Don Elliott, 1958 TR3A

£40.47 x 1.7589 = 71.1827 USD x .825 = 58.726 USD Wow. That puppy sold for 25 bucks. Brand new. Missed that train, didn't I? Don't even ask me how I found this address. http://europa.eu.int/comm/taxation_customs/publications/info_doc/taxation/tva/taux_tva-2003-10-1_en.pdf Thank you, Don. Mike G. '56 TR3

Mike - When I wanted to buy a master cylinder for my early TR3A, and I wanted an "original" one with both tube inlet and outlets truly vertical like your must be, I asked how much ? The guy (in Toronto) looked up his price for a new complete master cylinder at CDN $185.00. So he sold me this correct, original, grimy looking 45 year old one for half price. I paid CDN $92.50 for the correct aluminium body with no guts. Then I had to send it off to be re-lined and reamed. It seems to be normal to pay half price for an old part. That's about what you paid. Don Elliott

| I wish I paid 1/2 price. That's what I meant by "missed that train" - forgot to get back to the computer before the auction ended. I've been buying some small original items just to have for the day I might need them. Know anyone with a full front bumper assembly? The flatter type - TR2 early 3. Long time ago I read somewhere about a fella named Paul Oglesby in Kentucky - memory says he used to have an annual open house. I have some used parts resourses written down somewhere...I think he was one of them. I haven't looked in earnest yet, just curious as to how much one might cost. Any recommendations? Thanks, Don.
