Triumph TR3 - Speedometer adjustment ?
Is the small brass screw on the back of the speedomter and tach. for adjustments ? If so does any one know which way to turn it so decrease the indicated speed ?

I guess I will answer my own question. After taking the Tac. out of the dashboard I found that there are two screws that just hold the unit together. After taking it apart, I could see no way of adusting it. If anyone knows how to calibrate these, please let me know.

Hi Dick I'm no expert, but there are a few things you can check. The cable runs a kind of drum that turns around another piece (or is it the other way 'round?) Anyway, there's a magnet in there to make one piece follow the other to the extent it doesn't follow very far, just a little to show the speed, not go round and round. Maybe, since it's reading too fast, there's a piece of dirt or spiderweb or rust, rubbing against the piece that's connected directly to the needle. It's kinda tricky to get it apart this far, so be REAL careful. Part of the trickiness is the spring, just a hair really, that makes the needle go back to 0. That could be the problem, too. But I don't think I'd change it. Do you have stock diameter tires? Of course you do, sorry. Some speedo shops make conversion gearboxes to correct this sort of thing, but they cost more than a good gauge. This may be silly, but the indicator needle may not be positioned at 0. Again, if it's reading high, it would be reading a little high at rest, too. I have heard of shops that remagnetize (demagnetize in your case) gauges to regain accuracy. If it was reading low, you could try adding a magnet. Hope I've covered some areas you hadn't thought of. Maybe the junkyard or local TR club has an old gauge you can tear apart to get a feel for it. Good Luck

In case anyone else has a speedometer that is off, I solved the problem by installing a small digital unit. I mounted it on the gearbox cover, just in front of the shift lever.

I think that all of us with TR's have or have had speedo problems at one time or another. This might help you and your problems. Go to: www.team.net/www/triumph click on "Maintenance and Repair" (on left of screen) scroll down to "Triumph Odometers - Resetting and Overhaul" by Tony Rhodes. I think this manual might help cure many problems. Mike
