Triumph TR3 - Spacer for Hub Adaptor on TR3A

While removing the wire hub adaptor and disc brake caliper on my 1960 TR3A, I found a spacer ring placed between the hub adaptor and the hub. The spacer is .3" thick and the same diameter as the hub. The studs are 1" in length measured from the face of the hub.

I assume this spacer is an alternative to installing shorter studs appropriate to the wire hub adaptor. Is there any downside to using the spacer as opposed to installing shorter studs (or cutting the existing ones)? I do not have spacers on the rear wheels, and the studs there are appropriate for the wire hub adaptor.

TIA,

Bill - Is your spare also a wire wheel ? I thought so. Therefore if you get a "puncture" you will have to remove the spacer to get max. thread engagement with the steel wheel spare. Will the studs be long enough on the rear hubs for a wheel nut if you have a rear "tyre" go flat ?

Remember to carry extra conical type wheel nuts for the steel wheel in case you get a flat if your wire wheel adapter bolts are not the conical type.

Don,

As luck would have it, the spare is a matching Dayton wire wheel. Your point is well taken on the role of the spacer, however. If there's no down side to having the front wheels offset by .3 inches, I'll keep the spacers for the day when only a steel wheel will get me home.

Am I correct in my assumption about the offset?

Thanks.

I have steel wheels and I'm not an expert when it come to wire wheels.

I know that when I bought my TR3A I ordered steel wheel becaus of all the known problems with wire wheels. In 1958, pressed steel wheels were high tech !!!!!

And they were a lot cheaper. I think wires were an optional extra $150.00 and what with inflation of say 12 to 15 times since then, that would approximate $1800 to $2250 today.
