Triumph TR3 - screen wash.

What is the origonal setup for a screenwash on a 59 Tr3? Mine came with nothing more than the two jets on the scuttle so I have no clue where to start. The Moss catalogue show the fitting for a tr4 but is unclear about the tr3

Here's some thoughts on this, only because no one has chimed in with answers yet.

I want to restore this feature on mine some day, too. There is a plunger type pump, may be the same as an early TR4, using a different knob and the recessed ferrule wouldn't be used. I think it mounts on the left side of the dash, maybe under it if you don't want to make another hole.

I believe the cylindrical washer jar is made by Trafalgar, maybe Tudor. It's kind of translucent plastic. The holder is made from thin sheet metal strips, should be easy to reproduce yourself with a tinsnips and a couple of rivets or solder/braze it together. Mounted to the distributor side of the engine compartment (inner fender).

I was thinking the one on my TR4 wouldn't function, as it had no "foot valve" as listed in the Moss catalog. But it didn't need that. I used a real sticky gasket maker to seal the backside of the pump that leaked where it is swaged together.

There are washer parts for British cars of all sorts on ebay occasionally, most are probably OK if they are from about the same year. And you can look at webpages for underhood and dash pics for more ideas. VTR is maybe the best source for correct info.

I hope I've helped a little with these random thoughts, neither one of my TR3's has complete original washers, but someone here may be able to send pics of theirs.

One of my cars had a deteriorated plastic bag type fluid holder, I think it was an aftermarket kit, but would be period acceptable, I think. If you could find one. Or if you are negative ground, you could get something from the junkyard with an electric pump. Maybe JC Whitney still has this sort of kit, too.

I bought my TR3A brand new in 1958 and had the optional windscreen washer installed by the dealer. All early TRs came with the squirter nozzles installed even if the car was never equipped with the bottle, hoses and plunger. It cost me $15.00 in 1958. The Tudor bottle is clear glass. The Trafalgar bottle is translucent whitish plastic and is also used for the radiator overflow bottle on TR4s. Both are from England. All were "after-market" items installed by the dealers. The plunger for mine was dash mounted by the dealer with the word "Trafalgar" across the black push knob. The name is also moulded into the plastic bottle as raised lettering.
