Triumph TR3 - Removal of trans. mainshaft circlip

Hi out there:
Has anybody got any advise on removal of the transmission mainshaft circlip retaining 3rd gear in the absence of Churchill tool 20SM60.The major difficulty I see is the fact that it is recessed in the hub of 3rd gear.
Any tips would be appreciated.

I used a 10 penny nail. I filed the head of the nail so that approximately 2/3 of the head was removed leaving 1/4 to 1/3 of the head left sticking out one side of the nail. It should look like a miniature crow bar. Starting at one end of the circlip use the nail to pry up the end of the clip until it is just resting on the spline of the mainshaft. You may have to stick a small screwdriver behind it now as you continue to work your way around in each valley of the spline. The trick is to not let it slip back into the groove while you are prying someplace else.
