Triumph TR3 - Petrol Guage Problems
Hello Everybody, I have a petrol guage problem in my 1690 TR3. The tank is less than 1/4 full, the guage does not move off the "E" peg. I have 11.57 volts between the terminals, is this correct? Both wires are correct according to my Haynes Manual ( Green to one terminal, Green w/black to the other. All other electrical works, panel lights, wipers etc. The only thing that is not per the schematic is a Green wire from the guage to the wiper switch. If I do this, the fuse blows in the fuse block. The sending unit changes resistance as it goes up and down so I do not think this is a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would be interested to know also, what exactly is the resistance at empty and full. And other points, if anyone has the info.

john & tom, the wiring diagram in the haynes manuel is for a tr2, note the wiring shown for the tail lite/brake lite. look at www.britishv8.org click on british newsletter then click on tech. tips. it will show a wiring diagram for tr2-4a. on my 59tr3a there is only 2 wires off the fuel gauge. a green/black from terminal"t" to the fuel tank sending unit and a green wire to the fuse box terminal terminal "a4". the wiper motor has a green wire to fuse box terminal "a4" and a black/green wire to the wiper switch. the wiper switch also has a black wire to terminal"e" on the regulator. i checked the resistance on a new fuel sending unit. the test meter showed full @ 21 ohms empty @250 ohms hope this will help, payne

Payne, Thanks for the info, that is how I have it hooked up. Do you know if the meter itself needs a ground hooked up? The only ground I could think of would be through the bracket that holds the guage to the panel.

Wow! thanks Payne. Now I have to write it down somewhere I won't forget where it is or lose it. Thanks again! John, the guages are often grounded with a wire under one of the thumbscrews holding them on. I can't remember if they all are like that, but the wire has a ring connector with a small hole that fits the mounting screw.
