Triumph TR3 - Oil Pump FDrive

Have a 1960 TR3A that was rebuilt. It seems that the distributor drive shaft did not mesh with the oil pump. So the oil pump is not pumping. IS there any trick to replacing the lower part of the distribut with the heilical geared shaft. I want to avoid having to remove the oil pan and oil pump to see what is wrong.

Any ideas out there??? Thanks... Bob

Pull out the shaft from the distributor that drives down to the pump. Look at the bottom end. There is an off-center slot that engages a "tang" with a cross pin through it.

It may be that you need to rotate this shaft 1/2 a turn so the the shaft sits down in the off-set tang where it should.

Is it possible that you have oil pressure but the gauge is not reading ?

Or it might be that the new oil pump is slipping. Many of the pumps made since 1985 do not have a cross-pin (as shown in all the original manuals) to secure the lobes to the short rotating part of the pump shaft. They use soft steel and put about 0.005" of straight knurling on the soft steel shaft to "secure" the lower lobes of the pump to the shaft. But if the knurling slips, the pump shaft will turn, the the lobe assy at the bottom stays still.

To see this you will need to pull the oil pan.

Don't do this too long. Or you will burn out your engine.

I always wonder who did the rebuilding. If someone charged you a bit of change to rebuild, you should consult them. On the bright side, the pan's easy to remove, if a bit messy.
