Triumph TR3 - Lucas SLR 576 Lamps

Hi folks: I recently installed a set of reproduction Lucas SLR576 spot lamps on my TR3. Perhaps I have the wrong bulbs in them, but these things don't light up the road for sh--!
When I bought my car, it had repro PL700 tripod headlamps, which were a novelty at best. I switched to modern 7" halogens as many other have.
So, is it an inherent trait with that chrome sheild in the middle, or would a proper pre-focus halogen bulb set things right? Anyone else experience this?
