Triumph TR3 - Lockheed axle half-shaft
My car still has the Lockheed axle with steel wheels. I've contemplated switching the axle to accept wire wheels. I have a complete set of the right wire wheel hubs (with the square flange) for doing this. Last night, I read that to do the switch, I also need to change the half-shafts too. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks, Chet

Advice is to switch out to the Girling rear end, but from what I have read, you just need the Lockheed hubs etc, to do it. It has been way too long since I have done this in person though.

Chet, Curious as to why you were told that you can't just cut back the hub stud mounting bolts (the steel wheel studs are about 1/2" too long and will contact the wire wheel) and just go ahead and bolt on the wire wheel adaptor? Barry Shefner

Chet As per Chris, yes if you are going to change, change the complete rear end. The splines on the axles are different. So did your car come with wires from the factory. The earlier cars actually had splined hubs for the wires rather than the adapters that bolt to the hubs. If you had steel wheels then the adapters should bolt to your hubs but the bolts will need to be cut down as per Barry and I believe a different nut is used. I still have the Lougheed dif on my TR2 nd had to replace an axle last year. Quite pricy so dont throw out the old one. Brian
