Triumph TR3 - lighting
| I have a 1959 TR3A that I am trying to get the lights working. I have a Haynes manual but the elec. diagram is for the model where the brake light is also the rear plate light. I have the model where the tail lights are also the brake lights and the small bullit rear lights are the directional lights. Questions... When pulling the light switch, is the first notch parking lights and the second notch the headlights? Also, when the pull switch is in the second notch what does turning the switch to the right activate? Finally can anyone tell me where to get a electrical diagram for my model? Thanks, Dave p.s. I do have a fair amount of extra TR3A parts and MG parts. |

| Been so long since I drove or worked on the wiring in the 3's.. But if I remember right, the first position is park lights, turn a little and pull for headlights. Does Dan Masters site have TR3 wiring diagrams? That's Advance Auto Wire, I think. If the wires themselves look OK, I'd suggest cleaning/replacing all the bullet connectors. And cleaning/replacing all the light sockets. A small wire brush for cleaning 22 rifle barrels is great for inside the connectors. And the grounds must be good. The rear wiring is so simple that you shouldn't have a problem with that. And I can't think of any other differences in the models. The brighter filament is brakes, the dimmer one is taillight, if you get them backwards, just flip 'em. A test light, just a bulb soldered on a couple of wires, will help. And/or a volt-ohmmeter. A stupid mistake I made a couple of times was thinking I had a short when I was measuring through the filament of a lightbulb. Duh. If you pierce the insulation on wires, seal it back up with some silicone or something. I hope I helped a little and didn't insult your intelligence. |
