Triumph TR3 - Insurance
After 20 years of storage and 4 years of restoration my 1959 TR3A is finally ready for a license. In order to get that I must have liability insurance as required by the state. I have checked with three insurance companies so far and was wondering if any one out there has experience that would help me determine which one and what additional coverage over state requirements is appropriate. I have so far contacted USAA, USAA Antique, and American Collectors Insurance and have three different quotes with three different coverages making it difficult to compare. Any wisdom that anybody has would be appreciated. hjr

Have you tried JC Taylor or Hagerty?

I would recommend an agreed value. Having never done it, I'm not much help, but it sounds like you have a lot invested, and your loss could be disappointing if you don't get it covered for what it's worth. A bunch of dated pics and receipts might help, and maybe you have to get it professionally appraised. If you did most of the work yourself, take that into consideration for the total cost of restoration. I'd sure hate to have to rebuild a perfectly restored car myself soon after I'd put so much into it the first time. For sure, get uninsured motorist coverage. You probably have thought of all these things, but just in case you haven't.. A lot of classic policies have restrictions on mileage, etc., so if it's going to be a daily driver, talk to your regular company too.

R. L. and Tom, Thanks for the comments. I went with American Collectors. Do not like the restrictions but I guess I can live with them. Since I got antique plates the state also requires a log book of miles driven and it cannot be over 1000 miles a year. I will see if that is enough to cover trips to car shows, repair locations, etc. If not will try a different insurance next year. hjr
