Triumph TR3 - Hypoy Gear Oil
Hi all: I've gotten several recommondations from this site on the type of hypoy gear oil to use in our cars. Specifically, one w/ a GL4 rating, not a GL5 due to the use of yellow metals in the tranny/differential. Problem is, I can't find any! Where did you folks get yours? One item I did find was a Pennzoil product called "Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid". Supposedly designed for certain manual transaxles and transmissions on some GM & Chrysler cars, it "provides excellent oxidation stability, low temp. performance, and is compatible w/ yellow metals such as bronze, brass and copper". But it doesn't say what weight it is, and of course the auto parts clerks don't know much these days. Has anyone heard of this product, or have you any sources for the correct rated hypoy oil? As always, any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, I found Cooper Sportmaster GLT tires and tubes for $57.50 each out the door. Ironically, they're right down the street and familiar w/ Triumphs! Thanks for eveyone's input on my thread entitled "tires". Mike G. '56 TR3

Mike: The original specs for the gearbox oil was for SAE 30 engine oil up to 70F, SAE 50 for over 70F.and SAE 20 under 10F. The diff. called for SAE 90 (hypoid) over 10F and SAE 80 Hypoid under 10F. I used 20/50 engine oil in the gearbox and 80/90 Penzoil Hypoid in the diff and have had no ill effects to date. (Quaker State also make one that seems to be suitable and I am sure others do as well). I understand that too thick an oil in the gearbox/overdrive can cause problems.

You can find the GL-4 at NAPA if you have one in the area. Mine does not carry it in stock but they called their warehouse and had it the next day. It was only $3-4/qt if I remember. I use it both in my gearbox and diff for both my tr3a and tr6. Mike

Thanks for your input guys. I used Castrol 20-50w in the gear box and found Sta-Lube 80-90w at Napa. One more step finished... Mike
