Triumph TR3 - How to Polarize a Generator

Why does one need to polarize a generator when installing a new one ?

Is it done once it is in the car ? On the Bench ?

What are the detailed steps to polarize it ?

What will burn out if you run the car before it is polarised.

Don-There are instructions in the Moss catalog on gen. polarization. They reccomend it be done when a new gen. is fitted. It is done when the gen. is installed in the car, but before the wires are connected. A wire connected to the hot side of the bat. is then momentarily touched to the field (smaller) terminal on the gen. Thats it, reconnect the wires in the usually manner. I don't think any damage would be done by not polarizing the gen. unless some polarity sensitive things like electronic ign. systems or stereos were added. I notice that the procedure is not mentioned in any of the repair manuals.
