Triumph TR3 - Fuel Tank Overflow Tube

Hi All:

I replaced the fuel tank seven years back and remember having loads of fun trying to get the overflow tube with banjo bolt back in. Last week I filled the tank to the point where during left hand turns fuel spilled (dumped) out the overflow tube. Does the overflow tube come straight out off the banjo bolt and stay parallel to the tank top and then go down or is there a bend in the tube upwards away from the tank before it goes down. Did I simply overfill the tank? At least I know it vents well but the possible big boom syndrome scared me.

Harry - The pipe comes out horizontally and then curves up about 1/2" before it curves down vertically in the space between the side of the tank and the inner wall of the rear fender. Then there is a length of rubber tubing that is attached to the pipe and this fits through a small hole in the floor. Any overflow should land on the ground if the tubing is long enough to get to below the frame.

I don't think the little curved rise in the pipe has any effect.

My TR3A is an early one (TS 27489 LO) so the tank has a capacity of 12 Imperial gallons (15 US Gal). The later TR3A's and TR3B's have slightly less capacity.

I have never had any gas overflow. When I was driving to VTR in Portland Oregon in 2000, I filled up outside Boise, Idaho and put in 15.05 US Gals. and even then I never saw any overflow. I had run out of gas about 300 yards from the gas station - luckily I was at the top of a hill and the gas station was at the bottom.

Thanks Don,

I had the pipe coming straight out and slightly down off the banjo bolt I'll try bending it up and see if that makes a difference.
