Triumph TR3 - Fan Mounting
| Hello all. Well the end is in sight after all - I can hardly contain myself! But I have run into a weird problem. I bought a TR250 fan (yellow plastic 8 blade)which needs to be mounted in reverse to keep it clear of the rad. Problem is, the blades touch the crossbar ever so slightly. Even the TRF recommends these fans for TR3's, but I've not heard of needing any special adapters or hardware. I was under the impression they bolted right in w/ the standard mounting kit. I'm contemplating making an aluminum disc 1/8" thick the same dia. as the pully extension, and put it inside the center hollow of the fan to pad it out enough to clear. Would there be any balancing or other issues with doing that? Has anyone else run into this? Any guidance offered from any TR "fans" would be great! Thanks... Mike G. 1956 TR3 |

| If the new part is turned on a lathe, it will be "in balance" so it should not change anything or cause any problem. What causes a problem, is when and early TR owner takes off the hub extension for the pfan and the balance "C" pieces from the front of the fan for the harmonic balancing of the crankshaft. Over the lat two or three months in England 4 or 5 owners have reported broken crankshafts when the took all this off and installed electric fans. 3 or 4 others reported no problems having driven 20 to 28 years without the mechanical fan, but they had left the hub extension in place. Now they are really worried. When I put in my 12" diameter electric fan, I put it in the front of the rad where it blows air into the rad. I heft the original fan etc in place. | Don: Thanks for the info. I was just reading the other day about the demise of crankshafts w/o proper fan assembly/balancing. Ouch! Thanks again, Mike G. 1956 TR3 |
