Triumph TR3 - fan belt
| Red light, still drove it for a ways (home). I had a generator failure on the TR4, it damaged my ill fitting narrow belt. The Gates belt that I took off, still good enough for an emergency spare, was too narrow, riding on the bottom of the pulleys. So I took the one off of my 3, very nice Gates green stripe wide cogged belt. The number on it is 695. I went to NAPA, they said that Gates is their belt supplier, the NAPA number is 25-28386. Not in stock, but available in a few days. I'm getting faster at changing the generator, didn't want to use the one from the 3. But wanted to drive the 4, so I made up a couple of brass tags to fit the screw terms, adapting them to spade. Rounded up another generator from storage, it charges, but whines a bit. So I'll be taking that one back off. Reminds me of my starter difficulty a couple years ago, piecing together a working unit. The one that has problems came apart fairly easy, the book doesn't tell you simple things like putting a socket and breaker bar on the nut and whacking the tabs on the pulley to loosen. Then the pulley and fan came off pretty easy. Needed a small puller for the end cap. I think I'll use that end cap to replace the whiny one. Just have to R&R the genny once more, I hope. I should use all new parts, I know.. I was quite amazed that generator brushes are not a common part anymore. Most of the parts guys couldn't even say generator. I will try to find a tractor parts place, maybe they speak my language. Maybe even spring for a ball bearing brush end cap. The drive end bearing is maybe a Timken 202? I haven't knocked out the rivets on that bearing housing yet to look at numbers, that bearing has not been noisy. Of 3 end caps I've had off, none of the bushes seem worn badly. I do try to squirt a little oil in there occasionally. Maybe I overdid it. The armature on the bad genny has some bad problems. The commutator has a visible high segment, must have made the brushes bounce like hell. It must have gotten real hot, too. The solder was flung off of where the windings touch the comm segments. Anyway, just my little story. |
