Triumph TR3 - Drive Shaft Fling with Grease
While pulling the rear springs, I noticed a large, greasy accumulation on the underside of the body overhead of the universal joint at the differential. It appears over time a considerable amount of grease has been flung off the spinning U-joint (as well as to the left and right hitting the supports for the lever shocks). Some of the grease has dropped onto the muffer, explaining the here-to-fore mysterious grease staining on top of that part. Is it likely that the grease flinging is the result of over greasing the U-joint, or does it indicate a failure or leak in the U-joint itself? After cleaning it off, I'd like to prevent its return. Or do I even want to interfere with the functioning of the automatic rustproofing system? Bill Stagg 1960 TR3A

Actually, the grease is dropping on the resonator, not the muffler. Bill

It happens even an mine and I have only greased my U-joints about 3 times in the last 14 years (over 78,000 miles). If you grease them as often as the book says, you will get what you have. No-one can see it under a car that is painted black. But it could be visible under one where the underside is painted white. Don
