Triumph TR3 - Body prep
In the process of restroing a 59 tr3. Have 2 questions on body prep if anyone can help would appreciate as I am a novice when it comes to body prep work but am trying to complete what I can to cut down costs. 1- Preparing to get some body panels dipped before I send the body to a shop for welding. The dip shop cautioned that some british cars use Aluminum mixed in with steel and the acid would eat away. I am dipping, hood, trunk, doors, rear 1/4 panels, spare tire cover and a rear clip Didn't see any aluminum - anyone know any different. 2 - was going to get the rest of the body media blasted because of cost of dipping the entire body. 1 of my rocker panels at side of drivere door has not rusted through yet but I can see some rust behind - what should someone do about this rust? - leave it until it completely rusts through after the restoration or have it removed and replaced with new?

1. No aluminum worries. 2. Rocker panels - I would suggest replacing as it is almost certain to cost less than repair. I think they are less than $30. Other thoughts - why not dip your front fenders too? And apron? Just because they are easy to remove from the body... Jim

Thanks for your help! Was planning on dipping the bonnet and frontv 1/4's after some minor work. The car I am working on(my dad's)was hit by a drunk driver in 79 dented the rear and smashed the bonnet & front 1/4's and internal wings. Fortunately it was garage kept after the accident till present and hasn't been eaten alive (still have original floors!) Bought a front half of a car and it is waiting at the body shop for me 2hrs away. To get complete front 1/4's I am planning on cutting the good parts from mine and the non rusted parts from the new front and having them welded together for a complete set. Currently trying to do most of the prep work such as dipping available parts as possible because of how much I will get charged by the body shop for their work.
